More Details

Abyangam

The whole body is massaged with specific lukewarm herbal oils for about 45 -60 minutes depending on an Ayurveda clients body condition and as per the physician’s instructions. This massage aids in nourishing and re-energizing the body’s tissue, by releasing toxins from our cells. Ultimately gifting us with healthy skin, preventing early aging and relieving various muscular aches and pains.

Dhara

As per body conditions and instructions from the physician, a continuous stream of herbal oils or various kinds of medicated milk or butter milk are gently poured on the forehead of a guest, using a specific technique for about 45 – 90 minutes. Relaxing and re-energizing the central nervous system, the Dhara massage has been demonstrated to be good for insomnia, vatha predominated diseases, mental disorders, memory loss and certain skin and eye disorders.

Kizhi

Herbal leaves or herbal powders are crushed and applied to the entire body along with hot medicated oils in boluses for 45 minutes. This therapy benefits and aids in the treatment for osteoarthritis, arthritis with swelling, spondylosis, sports injuries, lumbago and sciatica.

Sirovasthi

In a close fitted leak proof cap with black-gram powder, medicated oil is allowed to rest on a patient’s head, while maintaining constant temperature conditions throughout, for specific periods of time, as per one’s body conditions and physician’s instructions. Sirovasthi is normally suggested when there is an indication of loss of tactile sensation, facial paralysis, sleeplessness, experiences of dryness in the nostrils and throat and instances of increased intraocular pressure, severe chronic headache, multiple sclerosis and parkinsonism.

Udwarthanam

Herbal powders are massaged on the whole body using a specific technique for about 30 – 45 minutes according to one’s body condition and physician’s instructions. This massage has been demonstrated to be useful in reducing weight while strengthening muscles, tightening loosened skin and controlling cholesterol levels.

Nasyam

In each nostril, drops of medicated oil or herbal juice are administered in an aim to help eliminate toxins from the head, and neck region and aids in curing migraine, sinusitis, chronic cold, chest congestion, cervical spondylosis and facial palsy. Undergoing a Nasyam therapy assures lightness of the body and head, helping one sleep better.

Ksheera Dhoomam

This therapy involves a fermentation process with medicated cow milk where the steam of heated milk is passed over the face and tongue. This procedure aids in the treatment of facial paralysis, speech disorders, cervical spondylosis, spastic disorders and neurological issues.

Pizhichil

With the help of two masseurs on either side of an Ayurveda client, pieces of cloth dipped in lukewarm medicated oil is rubbed over the body for about 60 – 90 minutes in a rhythmic motion, depending on body condition and physician’s instructions. The pizhichil technique is generally used for stiff joints and limbs, paralytic conditions and vata dominant conditions.

Njavara Kizhi

This massage is one of the special forms of treatment widely practiced in Kerala. Cooked rice warmed in a mixture of Balamoola Kasaya and cow’s milk is tightly packed together and tied in pieces of cloth bags, to form little boluses. The rice pudding is massaged over the body making it perspire with adequate pressure and movements as required for the Ayurveda client. The pressure from the massage strokes, forces out the rice pudding contents from the cloth bag onto the body. The excess rice pudding residue that is forced out, is collected and rewarmed and massaged onto the client’s body again. This process is repeated until all the Kashaya and rice pudding contents in the cloth bag have been extracted out and used to massage. The Njavara Kizhi massage is used in the presence of various disorders of the nervous system, chronic rheumatic diseases, joint pains, emaciation of limbs, diseases borne of vitiated blood and multiple sclerosis, ultimately helping the body become strong and sturdy with well-developed musculature.

Vasthi

Vasthi massages play an important role in aiding the treatment of an array of health disorders, especially in the Panchakarma style of Ayurveda treatments. Herbal oils or herbal extracts are applied throughout the rectum, purifying the body and maintaining health and longevity. This technique is normally used for arthritis, paralysis, hemiplegia, numbness, gastric complaints associated with rheumatism and constant constipation.

Tharpanam

In a cleaning process of the eyes aiming to give cooling effects, the Tharpanam therapy involves placing medicated ghee in the eyes around a boundary of herbal paste for 15 – 30 minutes, depending on body conditions and physician’s recommendations. This form of treatment aids in the prevention of cataract and strengthens the optic nerve.

Food & Dining

Dining at Nikki’s Nest

Nikki’s Nest has two unique sea facing restaurants. Hibiscus, our vegetarian restaurant, caters vegetarian food to our Ayurveda guests, while Orchid, the sea food restaurant, takes care of one’s sea food cravings and any orders from our menu for both walk in and live-in guests. At Nikki’s Nest, we take great care of any diet needs, restrictions and concerns our guests may have. Over the years, our kitchen has tenderly dealt with various and unique allergies and diets, including those allergic to onions, garlic, tomato, aubergine, capsicum, pineapple, peanuts and white sugar and guests who require a ‘’gluten free’’ or ‘’vegan’’ diet. Guests are free to email and inform us well in advance before check in, as this will give the kitchen sufficient time to welcome you with healthy suitable dishes.  Whatever ‘’out of the book’’ concerns one may have, our chef and his crew have deep-rooted answers and will try and find ways to create food especially for you, according to your health needs.

Crafting Ayurveda Food at Nikki’s Nest

With careful consideration to serve food according to Ayurveda principles, meticulous planning and co-ordination between our Chef and the Ayurveda Vaydyars make it possible for our guests to enjoy Ayurveda food, that has been crafted to suit a unique blend of Indian cuisine and International favourites while basking in the warmth of our tropical sun. Very popular for her authentic vegetarian kitchen, the chef and his crew have created a wave, making the kitchen continuously bustle with activity. Following the principles of Ayurveda, and to enhance detoxification, we only serve a vegetarian buffet for all our guests undergoing treatment. But of course, the sea side could beckon someone to indulge in occasional seafood, which our Chef can cater to, with approval and consultation from our Vadyars (Physicians).  As an extra precaution towards healthcare, the kitchen of Nikki’s Nest uses only bronze cooking vessels as this prevents any kind of metal or alloy adulteration.

Nikki’s Promise to Nature’s Food Source

Nikki’s Nest does not believe in the use of artificial food colouring, essence or preservatives, as we strive to serve wholesome healthy meals and we do not wish to adulterate nature for any monetary benefits. In an honest attempt to serve safe and healthy food, all ingredients utilized in the kitchen come from reliable and known sources including our own plantation at Duke’s Forest Lodge, and our family garden. Our kitchen does not believe in storing half cooked food or taste enhancer sauces, as everything is made fresh from scratch. We also do not store chilled aerated, energizing or artificial flavoured drinks, because it has been proved time and again of the high content of sugar and other unwanted chemicals. Being an environment and animal conscious resort, we do not serve meat and any meat products and this concept happens to be complimentary to Ayurveda as well. But being by the sea side, when guests crave for sea food, the Chef serves it on request, and on special occasions. Through the power of vegetarian food, Ayurveda, regular morning Yoga and meditation sessions, we wish to spread the message of good health, and awareness about healthy food and lifestyle through our kitchen and vaidyashala.

Nikki’s Cook Book

With repeated requests for the past many years, Nikki’s Nest has finally released her special cook book, much to the delight of all our repeater guests. Nikki’s Cook Book has been designed and created after a lot of research and consultation with Chef Raj, and the management team, Maria Jacob and Nikita Jacob. In addition to recipes mentioned, we have also included a small section listing out the medicinal value of spices used in Indian cooking, consulting our Ayurveda doctors, Dr Praveen and Dr Geetha. The Chef and his crew has put together wholesome vegetarian recipes from our ancient and traditional Indian kitchen, handed down from mother to daughter for generations. Indian ingredients are now available almost the world over at any Indian store. As promoters of animal welfare and environment concerns, the management of Nikki’s Nest has decided to set aside a portion of the income generated from the sale of our cook book towards animal protection and environmental care, as well as for setting up of a much needed staff welfare fund.

About Nikki's Nest Kerala

Founded 1996

Nikki’s Nest in Kerala is a serene seaside Ayurveda retreat located on a quiet cliffside near Chowara Beach. Blending traditional healing with coastal tranquility, it functions as both an authentic Ayurveda hospital and a relaxing wellness resort. Guests experience daily Ayurvedic treatments, doctor consultations, yoga, meditation, and nourishing meals prepared to support rejuvenation. The property offers sea-facing cottages, a pristine beach, and lush tropical gardens. Ideal for wellness travelers seeking genuine Ayurveda by the sea, Nikki’s Nest provides a peaceful setting to heal, rest, and renew.

What Sets Us Apart

Water Management

Used water generated at Nikki's Nest from various departments of service; Kitchen, Ayurveda, Laundry, and Bathrooms, are purified and converted into freshwater for the garden. Recruiting help from this amazing technology, Nikki's Nest is able to recycle our water, putting it back to good use.

Rain Water Harvest

The roof of Nikki's Nest block rooms has been modified to serve the purpose of harvesting and collecting rain water which goes through several layers of purification, and stays reserved in Nikki's Nest well. The same water is again pumped up to our overhead water tank and goes through a second process of purification before being used by the laundry.

Generating Cooking Fuel for Our Staff Kitchen

Installation of our biogas plant at Nikki’s Nest, has helped to convert all our vegetable and fruit discards from our kitchens, to natural cooking fuel for our staff mess. Supplying fuel to cook nutritious food for our staff, has now become a very cost effective and efficient way to provide meals. This is a useful mode of generating fuel, especially when Nikki’s Nest retains her 100+ employees throughout the year, during both peak season and low season times.

Producing our Ayurveda oils and powders

The use of Ayurveda oils and powders for both external and internal applications, are combined and made from ingredients naturally sourced from reliable outlets or plucked fresh from our plantation, under the watchful guidance and supervision of our Ayurveda doctor. The benefits of producing our own Ayurveda products are multifold. Not only are we able to ensure the quality of oils and powders used on our guests, but we are also able to ensure that all the necessary ingredients for the production of each specific classical product are combined together, without leaving out any valuable herbs. This also provides opportunities for local Ayurveda Vaidyars who come from families that have been practicing this traditional herbal healing system for centuries, to supply unadulterated roots and herbs for the preparation of our Ayurveda oils and powders.

Putting Our Used Ayurveda Oil to Good Use

Excess oil collected after treatments from each guest is poured out together and passed on to small scale cottage industries that use it to lubricate their machines, used in rubberisied road tarring work and also used to make a mixture of termite proof oil.

Cleaning Drive

Nikki’s Nest has always been conscious of the growing menace of discarded garbage and plastic on the streets, causing distress and harm to the environment. We have taken it upon ourselves to clean our neighbouring areas on a regular routine since our inception, 1996. Coinciding with our Independence day, we formally inaugurated our environment club, ‘’Green Dream Team’’, on August 15th 2015, through which we take great pride and pleasure in cleaning our surrounding areas, every day for an hour. The garbage collected is taken away by recycling units where various projects are underway. This hopefully will create awareness among our own people and instill in each heart the urgent need of the hour to work towards a pollution free environment! We have also managed to gather the neighboring resorts under one umbrella, and we all work together towards maintaining the cleanliness of our beach. This communal work is done every Monday, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, involving staff of resorts, management and all those living off tourism.

Protecting Animals and Enriching Our Planet

We are very conscious of the various environmental concerns affecting us all and animals, and we make it a point to use only eco friendly and organic products with serious efforts to completely ban plastics in all forms. Being deeply concerned about animal welfare, Nikki’s Nest discourages elephant rides during visits to the elephant sanctuary, because of the high level of trauma and suffering of captive elephants. Instead it encourages guests towards observation and study of behavior and activities of this gentle giant. As the sight of hungry beach dogs is traumatizing, we at Nikki’s Nest decided to befriend the dogs by regular feeding so that they are friendly enough to be caught for sterilization and vaccination, after which they would be released back on the beach with properly tagged collars and a regular supply of food. This way, we hope to see healthy and happy beach dogs and a helping hand extended to the voiceless !
